I was working out yesterday in my usual spot at the community center, when I overheard someone say, “What are you doing for Valentine’s Day tomorrow?” I had forgotten. Without a special someone in my life, it was easy to overlook this day. I had made no special plans for today.
Then I recalled the acronym F.L.Y., which means “First Love Yourself”.
To me, it means before you can truly love others, or others can truly love you, you must first love yourself. So whether you are planning something special for your significant other or, like me, you are planning to move right past February 14th without a second thought, why not take a moment to do something nice for yourself?
In our Signature programs for top female executives, we spend time on ensuring we practice “self-care” to show that you should always first love yourself. It isn’t just about sleeping, eating well, and massages – although those are helpful. It also means celebrating the good things that happen each day, each week, and each year. It’s easy to celebrate others’ milestones or achievements, but we don’t celebrate ourselves enough.
What have you done in the last day, week, or year that deserves to be celebrated? Celebrate it today! It’s entirely up to you how much you want to put into it, but perhaps you want to buy flowers to display in your home, or treat yourself to a nice lunch, a special glass of wine, or a heart shaped box of chocolates?
Today, Be Your Own Valentine.
Whatever you decide to do, today is your chance to show that you deserve to first love yourself.
Happy Valentine’s Day.
